Job Description: Network Design Engineer

Position: Network Design Engineer
Department: Information Technology (IT)
Reports To: IT Manager

Job Summary:
The Network Design Engineer will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the organization's network infrastructure. This role requires a deep understanding of network protocols, architectures, and security principles to ensure optimal network performance and reliability. The Network Design Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to identify network requirements and develop detailed network designs that align with the organization's goals and objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Design and implement network infrastructure:
- Develop network designs based on business and technical requirements.
- Design and configure network hardware, software, and protocols.
- Collaborate with other IT teams to integrate network solutions into the overall IT infrastructure.
- Ensure network designs adhere to industry best practices and security standards.

2. Network performance monitoring and optimization:
- Monitor network performance and identify areas for improvement.
- Troubleshoot network issues and provide timely resolutions.
- Optimize network performance to meet or exceed defined service level agreements (SLAs).
- Conduct regular network capacity planning and recommend necessary upgrades or enhancements.

3. Network security and compliance:
- Implement and maintain network security measures, such as firewalls, VPNs, and intrusion detection systems.
- Ensure network infrastructure compliance with relevant regulations and industry standards.
- Conduct network security assessments and vulnerability testing.
- Collaborate with the IT security team to respond to and mitigate network security incidents.

4. Network documentation and reporting:
- Create and maintain detailed network documentation, including network diagrams, configurations, and procedures.
- Prepare regular reports on network performance, capacity, and availability.
- Document network changes and maintain an accurate inventory of network assets.

Required Skills and Qualifications:

1. Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.

2. Technical Skills:
- In-depth knowledge of network protocols and architectures (TCP/IP, OSI model, routing protocols, VLANs, VPNs, etc.).
- Proficiency in network design and configuration using industry-standard tools and technologies.
- Strong understanding of network security principles and best practices.
- Experience with network monitoring and troubleshooting tools.
- Familiarity with network virtualization technologies (e.g., SD-WAN, virtual routers, etc.).
- Knowledge of network performance optimization techniques.

3. Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in network engineering or network design roles.
- Proven track record of successfully designing and implementing complex network infrastructures.
- Experience with network security technologies and practices.
- Hands-on experience with network equipment, such as routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, etc.
- Experience working in a multi-vendor network environment.

4. Certifications:
- Preferred certifications: Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP), Juniper Networks Certified Internet Associate (JNCIA), or equivalent certifications.

5. Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:
- Strong analytical skills to assess network requirements and propose effective solutions.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex network issues and provide timely resolutions.
- Aptitude for identifying network performance bottlenecks and optimizing network configurations.

6. Communication and Collaboration Skills:
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to effectively communicate technical concepts and network designs to diverse stakeholders.
- Strong collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and vendors.
